Aspatria Match Report

A Winning Start for our 150th Season

On a packed coach we travelled to the back of beyond to play old rivals Aspatria, the rumours that their team ran out to the music from “Deliverance” were quite unfounded.

The weather forecast had been bleak to say the least or as they say in Cumbria “Normal” but the rains held off and the game was played in decent conditions.

Straight from the kick off No 8 Pete Homan takes the ball and after a marauding run,  the ball is fed along the back line to Aiden Moloney to out run the defence for the opening score of the campaign. This was converted by Andrew Baggett 0-7

The home side kicked off again but this time they reclaimed the ball and pressurised the Boro defence, they were repelled and our heroes in Maroon and Gold marched back into the home 22. the ball was given to Jack Mac who threaded the defence with a sumptuous pass to Aiden who scored again. Baggy’s con made it 0-14.

Aspatria then hit back with a penalty kick 3-14

A good catch and drive from the Boro pack, gives another opportunity to the back line and when the ball is spilled backwards Brendan Hill picks it up and bounces off defenders to finish the first half scoring with a try.

Half Time Aspatria 3 Boro 19.

Good work, again, from the kick off sees Aiden cross for his Hat Trick and Baggy converts 3-26

Aspatria, who have never given up by the way, respond with 2 tries of their own 13-26

A kick and chase from Middlesbrough sends, yes, you’ve guessed it, Aiden Moloney through to score his 4th try of the match this ends the scoring for Boro 13-31

Aspatria rally and conclude the match with a try out wide.

Final Score Aspatria 18 The Mighty Middlesbrough 31

A fantastic start to our Season of Celebration.

Thank you to all the supporters who came on the coach and those who made their own way across

Biggest surprise of the afternoon came when a local mini bus arrived and Chris and Benn Horton, Ben Patto, Marty Feathers, Joe Secret, Simon Moore and Andrew Catterson got out to support the lads. Catto is based over in Cumbria now and had the lads to stay Friday and Saturday, it was great to see them all. Not sure Mrs Catto would agree lol.

Next week we are at home to old rivals Northern RFC at Le Parc du Acklam KO 3pm
