Consett Report

30th January 2023

Well what a game we saw up at Consett RFC today with two very good sides pushing each other all the way.

The home team took the lead after some pressure then a lovely backs move saw their centre loop around to score the conversion was good 7-0

Following some good hands from Boro, Consett intercept the ball and despite the efforts of blind side Andrew Baggett and Fly half Nathan Booth a try and conversion were scored 16-0

This score-line is not reflective of the game as the away team are playing well, just not getting the run of the ball as yet.

Boro earn a penalty around about half way, but some back chat from the hosts moves it on 10 metres, the ball is kicked to the corner where from the ensuing lineout the Middlesbrough pack catch and drive towards and over the whitewash with prop Josh “Lyno the Rhino” Lynas coming up with the ball. Andrew Baggett adds the extras from out wide 14-7

On the stroke of half time Boro gain a penalty from which Booth hits a post and the ball bounces away from the Boro chasers to safety HT 14-7

There was a bit of confusion at the break when the referee adjusted the scoring saying the first conversion had been missed so the revised score HT Consett 12 Boro 7

Middlesbrough start the second half like a team possessed and score after the ball was passed along to Mr Reliable, Jack Luke McPhillips to score, con missed 12-12

This was quickly followed by a quick break by diminutive scrum half Jake Chalklen making a fantastic break before feeding flying wing Rhys Kilbride to score. Boro take the lead 12-17

A quick tap n go gets the ball into the hands of lightning legs Harry Bryce “Brycey’s on fire your defence is terrified” and the wing beats at least 3 defenders to score 12-22

Another great move from the Boro backs results in, wait for it, another interception try for our hosts 19-22 We seldom do things the easy way 19-22

8 minutes left, Squeaky Bum time

Andrew Baggett returns to the fray replacing Booth and his presence calms things down. He then kicks a penalty ending the scoring Consett RFC 19 Middlesbrough RUFC 25

I must mention some other players who contributed a lot to this win Pete Homan, I lost count of how many crunching tackles he made when required, Birthday Boy Alistair Lang along with fellow back row Shaun Kay for their relentless effort and dog about the ball, Newly engaged Myles Colvin and Finlay Magowan who worked tirelessly in lineouts and around the field, The front rowers Helmy Joe SawdonMartin Quinn who showed the opposition how to scrummage. Nathan Booth at 10 who distributed the ball extremely well, Full back Brendan Hill for his tenacious tackling stopping attackers in their tracks. The subs Jo McNeil and Big Billy Campbell who came on without altering the continuity of the performance. Great game fellas to Myles Colvin and Charlotte Lord who got engaged last week. Punching Myles punching. Congratulations

Also Happy Birthday to Kieren Thompson
